As part of the Northwest Passage Project, the expedition is visiting sites of cultural and historic significance. Yesterday, the NPP team visited Beechey Island, a site of great historic interest. The Franklin Expedition, while searching for a Northwest Passage,  spent the winter on Beechey Island in 1845, before the expedition vanished.  Three members of the Franklin expedition are buried on Beechey Island. The Franklin Expedition’s presence on Beechey Island was discovered in 1851, but little else about the expedition’s fate was known until more recently. In 2014 the wreck of the expedition ship HMS Erebus was found, followed in 2016 by the wreck of the other expedition vessel, HMS Terror.
